Although Wollaton Hall is renowned as being one of the finest surviving Elizabethan Houses in England, a relatively unknown part of the Hall’s more recent history is that it was the base of the 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment (the Red Devils) of the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division during 1944.

Prior to the D-Day landings, the 508th trained at Wollaton before being parachuted into Normandy on 6 June 1944. There it suffered heavy casualties and was awarded the Distinguished Unit Badge in recognition of its gallantry and combat action during the first three days of fighting. After returning to Wollaton in July, the regiment then went on to take part in Operation Market Garden, immortalised in the film A Bridge Too Far, and fought in the Battle of Bulge in early 1945.

During their time in England, a close relationship developed between the 82nd Airborne and the people of Nottingham, which culminated in General Eisenhower announcing the establishment of the Roosevelt Scholarships at the City’s Council House on 26 October 1945. The Nottinghamshire Roosevelt Travelling Scholarship continues to this day and offers young men and women aged between 21 and 30 engaged in trade, commerce or the professions the opportunity to visit the US for a period of up to four months.

The aim of The Wollaton Project is to conduct an archaeological excavation of the site of the former 508th camp in the grounds of Wollaton Hall to coincide with the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Over the summer, Trent and Peak Archaeology will carry out a controlled excavation of the site to recover artefacts that will then be put on permanent display at the Hall. It is also intended to produce a television documentary of the excavation that will be screened in both the US and UK.

The Wollaton Project will have considerable tourism benefits for Nottingham, diversifying Wollaton Hall’s visitor offer and placing it on the battlefield tourism trail, while it will also strengthen the existing links between Nottingham and the US and attract increased numbers of overseas visitors to the City.

In order carry out the excavation, the GNP will provide Trent and Peak Archaeology with over £25,000 of Single Programme funding.

Attenborough Interpretation & Access Improvements

Attenborough Nature Centre is an award winning Site of Special Scientific Interest to the south of Nottingham covering 145 hectares.

The reserve was originally opened in 1966 and comprises a series of disused gravel pits providing an ideal habitat for a wide range of plants, birds and other wildlife.

In order to make the site more welcoming and accessible to visitors, a number of improvements are planned around the reserve. These will include:

The creation of an audio trail to be accessed via a visitor’s mobile phone.

The installation of 16 vandal-resistant interpretive panels at key locations across the reserve to be used in connection with the audio trail.

The development of a unique ‘migration map’ showing the different species that can be found at the reserve at various times of year.

An updated website and new marketing leaflets.

The creation of a new path and seating area around the education pond dipping platform and new interpretive panels on Wheatear Field to allow better access for visitors, especially wheelchair users.

Improved signage around the whole nature reserve for visitors.

To help undertake these improvements, the GNP will provide over £57,000 of funding to the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.

Further information on Attenborough Nature Centre can be found at www.attenboroughnaturecentre.co.uk.

Creative Industries Consortium CRM System

The aim of the Creative Industries Consortium CRM System project is to develop and install a bespoke new customer relationship management system within four different Nottingham cultural venues.

This will initially include Nottingham Playhouse, the Royal Centre, Lakeside Arts Centre and Dance 4, with the potential for further venues to join the new system at a later date.

At present, each venue uses a different box office system to sell tickets to the public and conduct its fundraising activity. These have not been significantly upgraded in recent years and are now deemed unfit for purpose by 2008 standards.

The new Tessitura CRM system that has been selected by the consortium was originally designed for the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and is now widely used by venues across the US, Canada, Australia and the UK.

The project is unique in that it is the first time a consortium approach has been adopted in the UK, with the intention being to operate the system jointly across several different Nottingham venues from a single server located within the Royal Centre.

The consortium approach proposed for the project offers significant cost advantages for the participating venues, as well as increased efficiency and revenue benefits. The potential benefits include:

Cost effective use of shared resources: Working from a single server a team of three dedicated staff will support all of the consortium members.

24/7 online access to ticketing, with a real-time sales for customers offering individual seat selection.

New collaborative approaches: The system will provide opportunities for joint promotions, product cross-selling and new initiatives among consortium members.

A 360º view of customers’ current and historical activity: This will allow consortium members to view their customers’ buying and giving activity for the first time and provide a consistent user experience across all participating venues, improving service levels.

In partnership with a range of other public and private sector funders, the GNP will provide £85,000 of capital funding to help develop and install the new CRM system.

Nottinghamshire STARS Awards 2007

In May 2007, Experience Nottinghamshire will host the second annual Nottinghamshire STARS Awards at Colwick Hall to celebrate the achievements of individuals and businesses within the tourism, leisure, culture and hospitality sectors.

This prestigious event will comprise an awards dinner and ceremony for 300 delegates from across these industries.

A total of twelve awards will be presented during the course of the evening, including categories for excellence in customer service, most promising student, best ambassador for the industry, team of the year, and a lifetime achievement award.

The Nottinghamshire STARS Awards will aim to highlight achievements in skills, training, retention and service within these industries, raising public awareness and helping to generate a positive career image.

In partnership with a range of public and private sector sponsors, the GNP will provide £15,000 of funding to help stage the awards.

Bestwood Winding Engine House & Dynamo House

Located on the edge of Bestwood Country Park, Bestwood Winding Engine House is the last surviving remnant of Bestwood Colliery, Britain’s first ‘one million ton pit’, which closed in 1968.

This impressive five storey building was originally constructed in 1873 and houses the only remaining twin cylinder vertical steam winder in the country, which is widely acknowledged by enthusiasts as a classic of its era.

The Winding Engine House is also a Grade II* listed building and is currently on the English Heritage Buildings at Risk Register.

In order to preserve this piece of Nottingham’s industrial heritage for future generations, it is planned to firstly restore and then transform the Winding Engine House into a visitor attraction by installing a glass lift to enable easy viewing. A six minute ride with accompanying audio commentary will display the workings of the winding engine in both comfort and safety.

Next to Winding Engine House is the colliery’s derelict Victorian Dynamo House, which once provided electricity to both the pit and the nearby Bestwood village. As part of the project, it is also intended to convert this building into a multi-functional space for use by visitors, students and the local community.

Once redeveloped, the Dynamo House will offer:

A visitor reception area, including exhibition and information boards about the Winding Engine House, Bestwood Colliery and Bestwood Country Park

A multi-purpose flexible space, providing a venue for education, volunteering and meeting events, with additional parking and toiletry facilities

A community-based online archive, retaining information on the former colliery, iron works, village and former mine workers

Kitchen facilities for local community use as well as light refreshment machines for visitors

An outside patio area and small children’s play facilities

The refurbished Dynamo House will also provide a new base for the Bestwood Country Park Rangers, locating them closer to the local community and providing increased security for the site.

In partnership with both the Heritage Lottery Fund and Nottinghamshire County Council, the GNP will provide £295,000 of capital funding to help restore the Bestwood Winding Engine House and Dynamo House.

Robin Hood Exhibition

Following the success of the new hit BBC Robin Hood television series, which attracted over six million regular Saturday evening viewers, Nottingham Castle has commissioned a bespoke Robin Hood exhibition based on the programme that will open in time for the screening of the second series during the autumn of 2007.

The Robin Hood Up Close exhibition will feature the latest audio-visual technologies and will include purpose made presentations by the cast, behind the scenes interviews and an exploration of the making of the programme.

Visitors will enter the exhibition through a mock-up of Sherwood Forest and will meet each of the programme’s characters through a series of specially written pieces before then gaining an insight into the filming of the series via a number of displays featuring props, costumes, special effects and stunts.

In order to help stage the exhibition, the GNP will provide £35,000 of capital funding to Nottingham Castle to meet its design and installation costs.

For further information on Robin Hood Up Close visit www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/robinhood/home.asp.

GameCity Forwards

GameCity is a unique and pioneering festival of videogames and interactive entertainment that was first held in Nottingham in October 2006.

The aim of the festival is to explore the business potential, educational value and cultural significance of interactive entertainment, and involves far more than the simple playing of videogames themselves.

Following the success of the 2006 GameCity pilot, which attracted significant national and international publicity, a second festival is planned for 24-28 October 2007.

Held in venues across Nottingham, this year’s programme will include ground-breaking games, premier screenings, music and exclusive appearances from the gaming industry’s top names. Key speakers at GameCity 2007 will include Alexey Pajitnov, the inventor of Tetris, and the acclaimed Japanese designer Keita Takahashi, the father of Katamari Damacy.

In partnership with Nottingham Trent University and a wide range of public and private sector organisations, the GNP will provide £139,000 of funding to help stage the 2007 GameCity festival.

For further information on GameCity visit www.gamecity.org.

Lace Market Heritage Audio Trail

The historic heart of Nottingham, the regenerated Lace Market quarter is home to many of the city’s creative and cultural attractions, including the impressive St Mary’s Church, the Broadway Media Centre, the Galleries of Justice, the National Ice Centre and Nottingham Arena, as well as the iconic new Centre for Contemporary Arts Nottingham.

In 2001, a Lace Market Heritage Trail was developed to highlight these cultural offerings to visitors. Narrated by the actress Joanna Lumley, the current trail guides visitors around the Lace Market, providing information on eight important buildings located within the quarter.

In order to update the existing trail and utilise the latest digital recording technologies, it is planned to digitise the current audio guide and then supplement its contents with additional information on many of the new cultural attractions and points of interest that are being developed within the quarter. It is also intended that the guide will be updated on a regular basis to provide the latest up-to-date information for visitors on the quarter’s offerings.

Once compeleted, the new digitised audio guide will be available to download directly from Nottingham related tourism websites, while visitors will also be able to hire headsets from the Galleries of Justice and then walk round the trail.

In order to digitise and update the Lace Market Heritage Audio Trail, the GNP will provide £24,000 of capital and revenue funding.

Between April and June 2006, the British Art Show 6 will come to Nottingham as part of its national tour to showcase new and recent developments in British art, being housed in a variety of different venues across the city.

In order to capitalise on this unique opportunity, the Sideshow project has been developed to represent the very best work of artists, curators, studio groups, networks and artist-led initiatives from across the region, and will run concurrently with the British Art Show during its time in Nottingham.

Sideshow will support a wide variety of different contemporary artistic mediums, including visual arts, photography, sculpture, performance, painting, live art, film, video, new media, installation and intervention.

Nottinghamshire STARS

Following the successful delivery of Nottinghamshire STARS in previous years, the Tourism, Leisure and Culture SAT has decided to continue its support for this project for an additional year.

The objective of the Nottinghamshire STARS project is to secure the ongoing implementation of the Nottinghamshire Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality Skills Action Plan that was developed by the Nottinghamshire Learning and Skills Council in 2003.

This aims to further develop the tourism, leisure and hospitality sectors within Nottinghamshire by creating higher quality employment opportunities and driving up skill levels.

The project will:

Facilitate the entry of local residents into rewarding jobs within the tourism, leisure, culture and hospitality industries, building partnerships with schools to raise the profile of the industry as a career of choice

Attract young people to take up first point of entry jobs in the tourism, leisure, culture and hospitality industries, addressing skills shortages and high labour turnover

Encourage action based learning so that employers share best practice on skills and recruitment

Introduce a skills passport, becoming the first area within the UK to have a skills passport for industry employees and new starters.

Introduce ‘Nottinghamshire Welcomes You With Pride’ days to maximise product knowledge, customer handling and the positive ’selling’ of the destination to enhance the visitor experience

Encourage job shop facilitation through a web based interface, raising the profile of available jobs within the sector

During 2006/07, the GNP will provide an additional £25,000 of revenue funding to support Nottinghamshire STARS.

Major Event Support 2006/07

For the past two years, the Tourism, Leisure and Culture SAT has supported Experience Nottinghamshire in delivering major event welcoming acitivity for events and festivals taking place across Greater Nottingham in order to enhance the sub-region’s tourism offer.

In order to capitalise on this success, the Tourism, Leisure and Culture SAT has decided to continue its support for major event welcoming for an additional year through an expanded programme that will help to create and maintain a comprehensive county-wide events calendar.

Events that will be supported by the project during 2006/07 will include:

The Nottdance Festival

The Nottingham Open

The International Childrens’ Theatre Festival

Lustre

The Under 23s and Junior European Slalom Canoeing Championships

The International Byron Festival

The DH Lawrence Festival

During 2006/07, the GNP will provide £82,000 of revenue funding to support major event welcoming within Greater Nottingham.

GameCity Lab Event

GameCity is an exciting new annual festival that will showcase interactive entertainment to both businesses and the general public in Nottingham from 25 to 29 October.

As part of the festival, the GNP has provided £10,000 of revenue funding for the GameCity Lab event that will bring together an exhibition of new research, technology and innovations from both of the two Nottingham-based universities.

The Lab event will present world-class university research and technology, and will provide an opportunity to talk to academics and try out new scientific devices. This will include demonstrations of new technology such as a virtual brain surgery trainer, a virtual reality headset that will take you on a tour of Southwell Minster and a high-tech screen that projects in 3D.

The New Art Exchange

The New Art Exchange, located in the Hyson Green area of Nottingham, is unique in being the only black-led visual arts gallery outside of London.

The current Art Exchange building on Gregory Boulevard was originally constructed in 1906 and has been occupied by the partnership since 1997. However, this is inadequate in terms of providing quality art space for professional artists, participatory facilities for the local communities and capacity for the partnership to develop its full potential.

In order to further develop the partnership, a new and vibrant multifaceted landmark facility is planned for the current Art Exchange site. Once completed, this building will provide gallery, studio, rehearsal, performance and workshop spaces, along with resource, business start-up and café facilities.

Over the next three financial years, the GNP will provide £534,000 of capital funding to support the development of the New Art Exchange.

Nottingham Tourism Centre Hub Development

As part of its programme to create a network of integrated tourist information points across the county, the Nottinghamshire Destination Management Partnership, Experience Nottinghamshire, is seeking to refurbish and re-brand both the Nottingham Tourism Centre and Hucknall Visitor Information Point.

The aim of the Nottingham Tourism Centre Hub Development project is to create a state-of-the-art tourist information centre in Nottingham that will act as a hub for the county’s network of visitor information points.

The refurbished Nottingham Tourism Centre will feature an enquiry centre; a retail area selling high-quality Nottinghamshire branded merchandise; internet access to provide access to the Nottinghamshire Destination Management System; a discreet call centre to handle electronic and telephone bookings; and additional publications storage space.

Funded in connection with East Midlands Tourism, the GNP will provide over £120,000 of capital funding for this project.

Major Event Support 2005/06

Since 2004, Experience Nottinghamshire, the county’s Destination Management Partnership, has sought to establish an events and branding infrastrucuture within Nottinghamshire by providing additional welcoming support for major events and festivals taking place within the sub-region.

This will include additional promotional activity through the local, regional and national media; the production of bespoke marketing materials and publications; bannering and dressing across Nottingham; and online promotion through the county’s new electronic Destination Management System.

It is intended that during 2005/06 the following events will be supported:

‘Waking Dreams’ – Pre-Raphaelites Exhibition at Nottingham Castle

nottdance 05

International Children’s Theatre Festival

10tele.com Nottingham Open

The Tour of Britain

Lustre

The British Art Show 6

During 2005/06 financial year, the GNP will provide £56,000 of revenue funding to support the delivery of this project.

DMS Commercialisation

In order to continue the development of the Nottinghamshire Destination Management System and provide increased electronic tourism information to both visitors and residents, the Tourism, Leisure & Culture SAT will provide additional funding to enable the installation of further software packages to upgrade the DMS.

These additional modules will allow integration with external agencies to provide combined ticketing, services and information for visitors; the provision of a journey planning system; the development of additional micro-sites to improve the provision of information; and the enhancement of Experience Nottinghamshire’s conferencing information facility.

During 2005/06 the GNP will provide £87,000 of capital funding to support the further enhacement of the Nottinghamshire DMS. The Nottinghamshire DMS can be viewed at www.visitnottingham.com.

International Children’s Theatre and Dance Festival

The International Children’s Theatre and Dance Festival is a major new cultural development pioneered by Lakeside Arts Centre in 2005.

During 2006 the festival will be held from 18 to 25 June and will promote high-quality professional theatre and dance for children, young people and family audiences.

New companies performing at the festival for the first time will include Aracaladanza from Spain and TPO from Italy, while Quebec’s Cas Public will return for a second year. The festival will also feature an exhibition from the renowned Architects of Air, whose large and inflatable Luminaria structures are hugely popular.

In order to support the development of the ITCDF, the GNP will provide over £31,000 of funding to enable Lakeside to undertake advance key strategic and marketing activities. This will include the development of on-line ticketing, the production of marketing and promotional material and activities, and also customer care training for front-facing members of staff.

Papplewick Pumping Station

Papplewick Pumping Station is currently being restored with £2.1m support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Biffaward.

Since the project began two years ago, the Trust managing the project has identified more that could be done to enhance the tourism appeal of the Pumping Station, as well as creating new educational resources. These improvements will include engineering works to restore parts of the beam engines, the creation of better café facilities, new play equipment, the development of new teaching resources and a better equipped teaching area.

GNP has offered £100k to undertake these new improvements.

Nottinghamshire Destination Management System

We have continued to support the development of the Nottinghamshire Destination Management System with a grant of £35k p/a towards its revenue costs this year and next.

A Destination Management System (DMS) is an integrated computer system that uses information stored in a large database and adds functionality such as online bookings.

For tourism businesses, this means that business information and sales can be managed online. For the holidaymaker or visitor, this creates a virtual ‘one stop shop’, where accommodation, attractions, tickets, merchandise, etc across the county can be purchased.

Nottinghamshire’s DMS is being purchased from Marketing Birmingham Ltd and is presently under development using market leading software from WorldNet.

Tourism, Culture, Leisure & Hospitality sectors skills action plan

Notts LSC have compiled a 2-year, 6-point skills action plan which focuses upon those issues identified as most important by independent research with businesses across the sector (including hotels, restaurants, pubs, clubs, sport/leisure facilities, entertainment venues and visitor attractions).

The LSC and Notts County Council have each set aside £80k for the delivery of the programme over the next 2 years.

Funding from the GNP of £25k p/a this year and next will enable the employment of a co-ordinator to ensure the delivery of action plan. The co-ordinator works on 6 strands of activity:

Senior Industry Ambassadors Scheme, through which certain employers will advocate workforce development in their own and other businesses in the sector;

Recruitment Solutions, which will develop solutions to counter the problem of high staff turnover and leakage;

Skills Initiatives, which will increase the quality of training available in customer service and management development and ensure it is employer and employee friendly, delivered through customised, flexible, bite-sized distance-learning formats;

STARS award scheme, which will create an opportunity to celebrate employee and business achievement for the industry;

Training select committee, which will be a small task group to work with the training providers consortium to ensure key training courses have industry relevance;

Positive Image Campaign, which will establish a communications plan and work with partners to improve the image of the industry, encourage quality work placements and promote career progression routes.

Nottinghamshire Brand

Branding and marketing is identified as the first key strand of the emda Tourism Strategy (2003) prepared by Locum Destination Consulting.

It recommends that we focus on brands that have the most appeal to visitors, because they either have “iconic” status already or are capable of achieving it.

Both Nottingham and Sherwood Forest are identified as such brands for the region.

The strategy then is to “attract and disperse” – to use the iconic brands to bring people to the region and once here persuade them to visit less well-known destinations in the vicinity.

Guided by Experience Nottinghamshire’s Image and Branding Panel, a new visual identity for Nottingham(shire) will be developed. The visual identity will subsequently be used in an integrated communications campaign, providing a promotional umbrella and a sense of place.

This project will build on this year’s work to begin the development of the brand. Purple Circle were appointed and will be consulting with key stakeholders to build up commitment and a sound basis on which to refine and test the brand.

The GNP contribution to the project is £50k.

Events and Branding infrastructure

Recent emda research showed the extent to which events and festivals are an important part of the tourism offer in the East Midlands.

It highlighted that there was strong potential for increasing the visitor spend generated in the local economy through better marketing and branding.

The regional tourism strategy highlights the need to encourage events and festivals and to programme them effectively to avoid clashes and build attractive clusters of events.

The Nottingham and Nottinghamshire tourism strategy also recommended as a high priority that a specific Events co-ordination group be established to prepare a quality programme of cultural events, agree “highlights” with optimum timing to spread the season, and to collaborate on marketing and event evaluation.

Experience Nottinghamshire as the Destination Management Partnership for the county is the natural lead on such activity but it requires additional staffing in order to take on the role.

GNP funding of £26k p/a this year and next will contribute to the costs of employing an Events and Branding Manager to take forward this work. Joanna Morrison has been appointed to the post.

D H Lawrence Pavilion Extension

Lakeside – the University of Nottingham’s public arts centre – has rapidly established itself as a cultural asset for Nottingham offering a high quality diverse programme of professional visiting artists, innovative projects and commissions. In its first three years of operation, Lakeside has attracted almost half a million visitors and now needs to expand.

The GNP has granted £100k towards the £1m extension of the D H Lawrence Pavilion. It will offer a new performing arts workshop, a separate visual arts workshop, a multi-purpose space, and a corporate entertainment and training space. The extension will provide facilities for an artist-in-residence, which creates new opportunities for emerging artists to display their work and for established artists to lead masterclasses and workshops from which teachers, artists, and individual members of the community may benefit.

The new Pavilion will enable Lakeside to offer a year-round programme of participatory events and training opportunities, underlining Lakeside’s commitment to the arts as a powerful tool for personal development, and an important element of lifelong learning. Lakeside works with early years, children and young people including special needs groups, but also with adults, including older people and people with disabilities.

Tourism, Leisure & Culture SAT budget: £105,000 (£70k revenue, £35k capital)

Tourism, Leisure & Culture SAT’s strategy in its first year was to invest its limited budget in improving the organisational infrastructure of the tourism sector – and in practice that has meant investing in projects to help Experience Nottingham (now Experience Nottinghamshire) offer better and more co-ordinated services to the sector.

Three projects were supported:

Set up of Experience Nottinghamshire

In 2003/04 Experience Nottingham was formed from the merger of Profile Nottingham and Conference Nottingham, with Dr John Heeley appointed as new Chief Executive in July.
GNP gave £10k towards new IT/telecomms kit to help with the successful merging of the 2 organisations, plus £20k for the first stage of developing a new brand for Nottingham.

Purple Circle, based in Nottingham, were awarded the contract to undertake the initial consultation and scoping of brand ideas.

Nottinghamshire Destination Management System

A Destination Management System (DMS) is an integrated computer system that uses information stored in a large database and adds functionality such as online bookings.
For tourism businesses, this means that business information and sales can be managed online. For the holidaymaker or visitor, this creates a virtual ‘one stop shop’, where accommodation, attractions, tickets, merchandise, etc across the county can be purchased.

Nottinghamshire’s DMS is being purchased from Marketing Birmingham Ltd and is presently under development using market leading software from WorldNet.

The GNP gave £60k towards the development of this £700k+ project in 2003/04 and will continue to support its development over the next two years. Other funding came from the Alliance SSP, European Regional Development Fund, and various local authorities including the City and County Councils. Experience Nottinghamshire have recently appointed Richard Worrall to manage the development and implementation of the system.

Business tourism research

Business tourism is the sector of the economy with most potential to generate increased income for the conurbation.

Experience Nottinghamshire commissioned Locum Destination Consulting to examine Nottingham’s current conference offer and recommend ways of improving our performance in attracting conferences and trade exhibitions to the city.

Experience Nottinghamshire are now taking this forward in their current business plan. They have already begun to capitalise on the business tourism market, attracting the Second National Conference on Business Tourism to the city in November.

Delegates will include representatives of regional development agencies, tourist boards, destination and venue executives, national, regional and local government, destination management organisations, conference organisers and intermediaries and suppliers, so the conference represents a major opportunity to showcase the city.

GNP contributed £15k to the costs of the study.
