Greater Nottingham Skills & Employment Board

The Greater Nottingham Development Strategy: 'Drawing Together' collectively engaged key agencies and organisations to work collaboratively in creating a shared vision for Nottingham.

One of the seven aims identified through the strategy was to 'maximise local talent and create a skilled workforce'.

To achieve this aim, local partners recognised the need for strong co-ordination and leadership. In September 2004 the Greater Nottingham Employment & Skills Board was established as the lead strategic body for adult learning, skills and employability across the conurbation.

Our Challenge

To develop and deliver a conurbation wide strategy in which we strive to

o       raise aspirations of local people to ‘achieve through learning’ and to ‘progress through work’
o       drive up the demand for skills from business
o       improve the match between skills supply and demand

The Skills Board works alongside the 14-19 Strategy Group which is the strategic lead for education and training of young people.

Priority Actions

A Skills Delivery Plan has been developed for the Nottingham conurbation; the plan begins to identify priorities and actions for collaborative working which will help break out of the low skill / low pay cycle. Priorities for 2005/06 are:

  1. Raise levels of achievement amongst 14 -19 year olds
  2. Raise levels of achievement in learning for adults
  3. Increase the number of people with skills into jobs
  4. Encourage local employers to invest in training and up-skill their employees
  5. Improve the responsiveness and co-ordination of provision to meet employer needs
