SKILLS FOR LIFE PARTNERSHIP

Despite Nottingham being an economically vibrant city, it is still home to some of the most educationally disadvantaged wards in the UK. The Moser Report 'A Fresh Start' (1999) estimated that 144,000 Nottinghamshire ‘working age’ residents have poor basic skills. To address this Nottinghamsire Learning and Skills Council have set some challenging targets, between 2004 and 2007 it aims to deliver 16,500 countable outcomes across Nottinghamshire.

To ensure that Nottinghamshire becomes a place where residents are confident in there literacy, numeracy and language skills, partners have come together to encompass a joint strategy and actions. The Nottinghamshire Skills for Life Partnership (NSfLP) is a voluntary partnership that comprises of organisations from the statutory, private, voluntary and community sectors who are committed to addressing the basic skill needs of adults.

NSfLP's Strategic Plan 2004 - 2007 outlines the partnerships core values, mission, role and structure; its 10 strategic aims and associated objectives.

GNP is committed to investing £17,500 per annum until March 2008 to help support the management, co-ordination and administration of the partnership.

AIM HIGHER

Aimhigher Nottinghamshire is part of a national outreach programme tasked with raising the aspirations and attainment of young people to encourage their participation in higher education through both traditional and non-traditional pathways.

This is particularly relevant within parts of Nottingham inner city where education attainment is low, as is progression to further and higher education institutes. Currently 15% of young people within the city progress to higher education, which is well below the national average.

To achieve it’s goal Aim Higher works in partnership with a range of partners including schools, further education colleges, universities, Connexions, NEBA, training providers, employers, parents and carers to support young people and adults from groups that are under-represented in higher education.

GNP is committed to investing £30,000 per annum until March 2006 to help support the Aim Higher initiative.

GET ON WITH GRADUATES

Nottingham has two very good universities creating high numbers of well qualified graduates each year, despite this the Greater Nottingham area struggles to retain higher level skills. This project has been designed to work with local small and medium sized enterprises (SME’s) to promote the benefits of integrating higher level skills into their businesses.

The project provides support to help identify suitable graduates, supporting the business through the recruitment and induction process. The project also provides support to the graduates ensuring they integrate effectively into the business.

GNP is committed to supporting 25 graduates into employment within SME’s during 2005/06.
