Background

In order to build upon existing organisational structures within the conurbation, the Greater Nottingham Transport Partnership (GNTP) acts as the GNP's Transport Strategy Action Team.

The GNTP is chaired by Derek Brewer, Chief Executive of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, and is composed of representatives drawn from across the public, private, local authority and voluntary and community sectors.

Organistions that are currently represented on the GNTP include the City and County Councils, the East Midlands Development Agency, Government Office for the East Midlands, Nottingham City PCT, Boots, Experian, Trent Barton, the Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, Nottingham Development Enterprise, the Nottinghamshire Rural Community Council and the Federation of Small Businesses.

Aims and Objectives

In order to make a practical difference and add value to the plans of its partners, the GNTP has agreed to focus its work on three main strategic areas.

These are as follows:

1. Acting as a business interface on:

  • Policy issues

  • Managing concerns

  • Joint lobbying

2. Delivering projects, particuarly those which are business facing:

  • Keep the Wheels Turning

  • Integration

  • Ticketing

3. Managing 'The Big Wheel' campaign

The wider work of the GNTP will also help to provide a consistent message on transport issues within the conurbation and will aid integration, accessibility and a more joined-up approach to planning.

The GNTP supports the transport priorities outlined within the Regional Economic Strategy, as well as those of central government as highlighted within the Local Transport Plan.

During the 2007/10 financial period, the GNP and GNTP's key priorities for investment will be as follows:

  • The development of NET Phase Two

  • Transport integratation through:

          - Bus strategy, incluing Link buses
          - Signage
          - Smartcards and integrated ticketing

  • Smarter choices and accessibility with businesses

  • The Big Wheel programme

  • Respect for Transport

In addition to these priorities for investment, the GNTP will also seek to lobby on the following transport issues:

  • Airport developments and transport linkages, including further improvements to public transport to and from East Midlands Airport

  • Ensuring that the proposed East Midlands Parkway station provides an interchange that has a positive impact on travel in and around Greater Nottingham

  • The widening of the A453

  • Development decisions relating to NET Phase Two, including a consistent and strong approach with ministers in support of the expansion of the Nottingham tram system

  • A central government approach to charging

  • Key rail issues, such as:

          - The development of St Pancras International
          - Improvements to Trent Singal Box
          - The balance of local versus inter-regional rail services
          - Regional rail policy
          - Central Trains' franchises
          - The Nottingham Station masterplan
          - Inter-city routes

The Big Wheel

The Big Wheel brings together all forms of transport in Nottingham - bus, tram, train, car, cycling and walking. Its work is based upon the second Greater Nottingham Local Transport Plan, the document that outlines the strategy for Nottingham's transport network, and aims to ensure that its recommendations are put in place.

The Big Wheel is backed by the GNTP and represents the local authorities and companies working across the city and surrounding conurbation. It is committed to keeping Nottingham moving whilst also safeguarding the local environment, ensuring that Nottingham remains a clean and green city that is capable of economic growth.

Over the next year, The Big Wheel will focus on developing six key projects, with regular updates being given to the GNTP on their progress. These are as follows:

  • Support for local transport planning, including APR, Centre of Excellence, TIF and the Local Transport Plan itself

  • The promotion of cycling and walking, including work with schools in the city and county as well as NHS

  • Sports and lesiure promotions, including signage

  • The development of websites and new ways of targeting markets with access to information, including support for individual travel planning

  • On street campaigns

  • Smarter choices

In addition to these six key projects, The Big Wheel will also provide support for business, smartcard and cycle forums.
